Advanced cadences and chord progressions is designed for students in and above 4th grade theory/musicianship or those musicians wishing to further explore harmonic analysis.

Use this handy colour coded resource (based in C major) to analyse how cadences are made!

Advanced Cadences include:

• Perfect: V-I, Ic-V-I, IIIb-I
• Plagal: IV-I, IVb-I
• Interrupted: V-VI, Ic-V-VI, V⁷-VI
• Imperfect: I-V, II-V, IV-V, VI-V, IIIb-Ic-V

Advanced Chord Progressions include:

• Anacrusis: Vb-I, V⁷b-I
• Tierce di Picardi: maj V-I
• Passing 6-4: I-Vc-Ib, IV-Ic-IVb
• Chord III: IV-IIIb-VI
• Secondary Seventh: VI-II⁷-V, I-II,V⁷-I
• Suspended Chords: suspending 4th, 7th or 9th
• Decorations: passing notes, auxiliary notes, escape notes, cambiata, notes of anticipation and appoggiatura 
• Chromatic harmony: Augmented 6ths (German, Italian and French), Neapolitan chords
